The 450/Roadster Transmission Fluid Confusion
If you ask on any forum what transmission fluid should be used in a 450 or Roadster,
you will almost certainly be told ATF (Dexron III). However, this information could be wrong.
Does it not seem strange that although the 450 gearbox is a manual the same as the 451, the specced transmission fluid is different? I have contacted Getrag to see if they can answer this.
I'll let you know. Until then, stick with ATF for the 450 as it has worked so far.
Franz M contacted me to say he has used BP Energear SHX 75W90 in 6 smarts (fortwo 450)
over the last 3 years with no problems even though smart recommend ATF.

Any GL4 75W90 gear oil
The oil rating for gear oil is different to that of normal engine oil.
75W90 gear oil has the exact same viscosity of a 10W40 motor oil.
This doesn't mean you should use 10W40 motor oil but you could in an emergency.
Engine oil is a lubricant and transmission fluid is a hydraulic fluid with some lubricational properties.
